It was pouring in Vernazza. Sheets of rain in the small village caused everyone to scurry into the small eateries up and down the main street. We could not find a spot for the four of us so we grabbed some food to go and ran for Hanna and Ken’s AirB&B. We opened a bottle of Prosecco and brainstormed on how to enjoy the day. After checking the weather for nearby towns we decided to catch the next train to Santa Margherita Ligure and from there hop on a bus to Portofino.
What a beautiful town and respite from the storm! The town was quiet, peaceful and so picturesque. We hiked to the castle and then to the lighthouse. The views were spectacular. We even found a secluded beach and path that led to the villa of Dolce & Gabbana. While hiking, Hanna found an amazing spot just behind the lighthouse to sit and enjoy a aperitif and some snacks. We couldn’t believe our luck.
We ended our day with a lovely dinner in Santa Margherita Ligure and caught the train back to Vernazza. When we arrived the rain had just cleared and the petite village’s lights were sparkling against the hillside. What had appeared to be a soggy mess of a day in reality turned into a complete joy!
